Pasig City – Some 432 participants gathered for the 1st Assembly of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) aimed at drumbeating support for PWDs to help them discover their potentials and become active members of the Church.
Participants of the assembly organized by the Council of the Laity held Saturday (July 11) at St. Paul’s College in this city, include PWD representatives from different parishes, special friends from “Let the Special Children Come to Me, Inc.”, Samahan ng May Kapansanan ng Taguig, Inc. or SAMAKAT, PWD Ministry of the Holy Family Parish and the group Talking Hands.
Rev. Fr. Orlando Cantillon, Vicar General and Spiritual Adviser of the Council of the Laity who represented Pasig Bishop Mylo Hubert Vergara in the Eucharistic celebration, said Bishop Vergara wanted to have a Ministry of PWDs in each parish under the diocese.
“Bishop Mylo is very happy to know that this assembly was pushed through because he gives value to the dignity of PWDs as children of God and he wanted to have a Ministry of PWD in every parish. This is one of the visions of Pasig Diocese,” Cantillon said.
In his homily, Fr. Cantillon shared the story of Saint Lawrence, one of the seven deacons who were in charge of giving help to the poor and needy in Rome during the reign of Pope St. Sixtus.
“One time a greedy pagan, thought the Catholic Church had a great fortune hidden away. So he ordered St. Lawrence to bring the Church treasure to him. The Saint went through the city and gathered together all the poor, beggar, sick and disabled people supported by the Church. He showed them and said: “They are the Church’s treasure,” the priest said.
“PWDs are important to Christ. This is what the Holy Father teaches the church, to go out and reach out to our brethrens in the outskirts, those who need help – the poor, the downtrodden, and the disabled,” he said.
“Another challenge for me as head of the parochial schools in the diocese is to gather students with disabilities and to give full support to them and their parents,” he added.
The next PWD Assembly will be on November 7, this year. ###
