Lay leaders join teambuilding on transition management

Antipolo City –Some 160 lay leaders from different parishes in the Diocese of Pasig including Sto. Nino de Taguig Parish joined the first Team Building on Transition Management held Saturday (July 18, 2015) at the St. Michael Retreat House in this city.
The Council of the Laity spearheaded the conduct of activity for Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) leaders to help them understand the reshuffle of pastors within the diocese and follow the will of God.
Sis. Gertrudes “Gigi” Bautista, Council of the Laity President said the lay leaders play an important role in establishing and maintaining harmony during the change of pastoral leadership in their respective parishes.
“The teambuilding is an essential step for lay leaders to help in the transition management of parishes,” she said.
The activity include a Eucharistic Mass presided over by Bishop Mylo Hubert Vergara and a Holy Hour prior the start of the main program.
Bishop Vergara said when he announced the major reorganization of parishes sometime in October 2014, he received mixed reactions and not so nice text messages from anonymous senders who object to the reorganization.
“It is not easy to change assignments and implement transfer of priests. They are reshuffled based on the needs of the church,” he said.
Bishop Mylo, who is also the main speaker of the activity, discussed what it means to follow the Lord and highlighted four characteristics of a good shepherd.
“The first quality of a shepherd is INTEGRITY. As shepherds, we should exhibit integrity in service. The second quality is PEACEMAKER. We should be peacemakers so that people become united in the parish,” he said.
“The third quality is PRAYERFUL. Let us pray every day because service is useless without commitment to prayers. The fourth quality is COMPASSION. The word comes from two Latin words: CUM and PASSUS which means “to suffer with”. If we want to be shepherds, we must suffer with the people,” he added.
The topic of his talk has been divided into four sessions namely: Session1: A Critical Challenge of Paradigm Shifting in Pastoral Service. Session2: Being Proactive and Reactive Servant. Session3: Interpersonal Leadership and Session4: Empowering Stewardship.
Bishop Vergara also thanked the Council of the Laity for organizing the teambuilding on transition management for lay leaders from different parishes in the diocese.
Fr. Orlando Cantillon, Spiritual Adviser of the Council of the Laity, said that the reshuffle of pastors was nearly complete with 98 percent of priests already assigned to their respective new parishes, despite painful for some leaders and parishioners.
The Diocese of Pasig had a major reorganization of priests in the diocese early this year.
