Bishops, priest, religious, lay leaders, common folks excitedly flocked the Cinema 3 of SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City at 7 o’clock in the evening last September 17, 2017 to anticipate another history unfolding before their eyes. These people went out of their way to watch the special screening of the Pope Francis Story entitled “Papa Francisco”.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio or “Fr. Jorge” was elected the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church in March 2013. Pope Francis still chose to live more simply thus he broke a tradition that had been upheld by popes for more than a century. This film reveals stories of his humility and how he continues to be a channel of hope and inspiration for all people…a messenger of God.

Fr. Anton Pascual led a short motivational prayer.

His Excellency Most Reverend Mylo Hubert C. Vergara, D.D., bishop of Pasig, graced the occasion. He rendered a very inspiring message that prepared the audience on what to expect and how to faithfully respond.

“…It is our hope that what we see will not be Pope Francis. Our hope is that we see our Lord Jesus Christ. He who is an instrument for us reminding us of how we should spread the Gospel. The Gospel of Jesus to whom we cling to, the Anchor of our faith…,” stressed Bishop Mylo in his message.

Atty. Toto Villareal, also gave his timely message as the current MTRCB chairman.

The short program was hosted by Bro. Bernie Canaberal.

Message of Bishop Mylo:

We are blessed tonight because as we view this foreign film even though its sub-titled, this will give us an opportunity to get a glimpse of the life, the teachings of Pope Francis. It is our hope that what we see will not only be Pope Francis. Our hope is that we see our Lord Jesus Christ. He truly is an instrument for us reminding us of how we should spread the Gospel. The Gospel of Jesus to whom we cling to, the Anchor of our faith. I’d like to thank the partners we have for this premiere night of the Pope Francis story: Pioneer Films. SM Cinema, MTRCB, Atty. Toto Villareal is here, Radio Veritas, Embassy of Argentina and all our media friends. We have come here because we have made efforts to make this dream come true that we watch this film. Enjoy and God bless you all!

Message of Atty. Toto:

Congratulations to all of us and to Pioneer Films for bringing in this film to the Philippines…I really thought that St. Catherine of Siena once said that the Pope is the sweet Christ on earth. I also thought that we should love the Pope for the real love of a son or a daughter for a Father. This film offers us a picture of and an insight on the man that we know to be Pope Francis. Struggles, weaknesses will be there as will be his trials and joys…but more importantly we would want to use his quotation perhaps to formulate a resolution more to in regard to our love and affection for the Pope…Do we get to read and anticipate with much eagerness the transcripts of his audiences which after all are available in the internet? More importantly,do we put to heart and apply his words to our lives? Finally, it would be good to pray for them everyday…images and sound are so powerful but as you will see they can also sanctify. To all of you thank you and I hope you enjoy the film.

Fr. Joselito Jopson, general manager of TV Maria said in his blog, “The movie explores not only the process of choosing the pope which is admittedly a mystery for the rest of the Catholic world, but of a far greater mystery – how the Holy Spirit molds each person towards interior conversion until he becomes an instrument even for the unbelievers, corrupt systems, and yes, even the entire Church. This film portrayed by one man, can indeed be the story of our struggles to live out and be authentic witnesses of the Faith. Showing this September 30, 2015. Highly recommended. Rating: 5/5.”
