Church Praying for Senator-Judges

Church Praying for Senator-Judges

Manila, Philippines – Catholic Church leaders are praying for the enlightenment of senator-judges to enable them to vote according to conscience and evidence and not according to partisanship in the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato C. Corona today.

Senators are expected to render their decision on Corona today or tomorrow after the oral arguments of the prosecution and the defense.

“I pray that the senator-judges will vote according to their conscience. May the Holy Spirit who descended on the Church on Pentecost day enlighten and strengthen our senators as we celebrate Pentecost today (Sunday),“ Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes, member of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) Permanent Council, said.

Malolos Bishop Jose Oliveros invoked the light of the Holy Spirit for the senator-judges so they may be able to discern what is right and what is true according to the judgment of their conscience from the evidence presented.

“We also pray that they may be guided by the Hoy Spirit to make the right decision not according to partisanship but according to their rightly formed conscience,“ he said.

Cubao Bishop Honesto Ongtioco and Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iniguez agreed with Oliveros.

“I pray that the senator-judges will use their conscience, best interpretation of the law, wholistic approach and not because of political affiliation,“ said Ongtioco. “They should vote according to truth,“ Iniguez said.

Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo is praying not only for the senator-judges but for all the people involved in the trial.

“I pray for both prosecution, defense panel, senator-judges, and CJ Corona: That all of them may act accordingly to honest conscience and objective truth and evidence in whose favor it may be,“ he said.

“This has been a very expensive court case and in a very poor country at that. God help us,“ added Lagdameo. (Leslie Ann G. Aquino)
